Something to Consider

My friend recently got a job with a firm that is made up of people who mostly speak English and she feels that she should take some english courses in toronto. She does not like it when she does not know what people are saying and this really bothers her. She also feels that it will help her to advance more quickly in the company and I tend to agree. She is a highly intelligent gal and she dreams of moving up quickly and I know that she can do it. I am so happy that she got the job that she truly wanted. To learn another language is such an important activity as it allows the mind to be active and prevents it from going senile, it is such a joy to also learn about a new culture and meet interesting people around the world and in many countries. I really hope to make best friends forever.

Reviews of Books: James Webb’s Fields of Fire

Let’s have a close look at James Webb’s resume and see we can expect great things from him: Highly decorated combat marine during the Vietnam War, journalist, Secretary of the Navy, Assistant Secretary of Defense–and now: Senator from Virginia!

Let me add one more accolade: novelist, author of the war novel Fields of Fire. Many years have have gone by since the Vietnam war, and seldom do we see any reviews of books that include this novel, especially by those interested in becoming a writer. Perhaps Fields of Fire will never be a great novel-chronicle as The Red and the Black or War and Peace, yet it is an important American work of fiction because it brings to our consciousness the insanity of our Country’s misadventures; in particular the great misadventure that was Vietnam.

The narrative is lively and it portrays a variety of well drawn characters. When Bob Hodges, Snake, or Goodrich walk point in the Godforsaken jungles of Vietnam, James Webb makes us tremble and suffer in our civilian shoes, as we sympathize with the grunts. And one can only imagine the stark, fearful, and dark nights streaked by the slowly hanging flares with which you could see the face of the Vietcong, the North Vietnamese soldiers, or even the Chinese troopers.

That we only lost 50,000 American soldiers in Vietnam is a miracle given the impossible task of fighting such a guerrilla war where your enemy and killer was your peaceful postman, waiter, or street vendor during the day. Live and learn: the war continued under the theme ‘Vietnamization.’ Our politicians and military leaders thought that one fine day, the South Vietnamese could take care of themselves, see for their own security, and have a stable democratic government. Vain hope.

We should be on the lookout for great things from James Webb. Here in our midst we have a quiet, humble American hero who, while on the campaign trail, wore his son’s combat boots to make a point, never once did he wave his medals to belittle his racist opponent, an opponent who was hypocrite and was in due time unmasked when he referred to a heckler as ‘macaque,’ a despective term that means monkey.

James Webb never run away from service–or hid in the National Guard, or sought deferments–when his country needed him during war-time. Having served with distinction –since he earned many medals, citations, and decorations– he deserves to be not only a U. S. Senator but perhaps even president of the United States! As he was serving with honor in Vietnam, he was also becoming a writer, for his experiences there gave him the material for his novel.

To think that there are virile men like James Webb fills me with great pride, just as shame rushes to my heart and angers me when I think of cowards who advocate war not having fired a single shot in defense of their country. Indeed, these warmongers are the so aptly called “chicken hawks.”

Warmongers, and their relatives, should be allowed the opportunity to be in the first wave of attack in any war the advocate. Only then should a war proceed. Those who advocate and press for war should not be allowed to push other people’s children to death until they themselves volunteer to fight in that same war.

We have to be thankful to James Webb and his son for what they are: American heroes who not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk-and they walk point!

If you haven’t read Fields of Fire, get it and read it now; it will make you proud to be an American.
