Think About The Right Boat Before Bying It

The first thing you should know when choosing a boat is that no single boat will do everything. If your looking for a boat that inspires confidence, don’t expect it to shine in light air. Boats that are exciting to sail on the weekends aren’t the ideal boats for a passage through the ocean.

You shouldn’t expect to find quick acceleration and load carrying capacity together with the same boat. You can buy a boat now to race or fish, then sail around later – as you can only do one or the other with a specific type of boat.

The logic to choosing the right boat is determining how you plan to use the boat. Think about why you want to own a boat, what you plan to do with it, and how you plan on using it.

For some, beauty is the first consideration. For sail boats beauty is very important, as you’ll spend a majority of time floating and sailing around, with many people looking at your sail boat. With people looking at your vessel, you want to make sure that it looks nothing short of amazing.

If you are planning to race instead of cruise, then speed is your primary consideration. There are many cruising sailors out there who simply can’t be happy unless their boats are moving very fast. The ideal boat for speed demons are those that can cut through the water, creating plenty of waves.

Fishermen on the other hand, want to look towards fishing boats. Trackers and other boats that are designed for fishing are ideal here. Fishing is one of the most popular boat activities, meaning that you’ll have plenty of boats to select from.

When it comes down to it, selecting the right boat is up to you and what you plan to do with it. Take your time, weigh your options, and you’ll have the right boat before you know it.

Big Lie #1: Buy and Hold

Copyright 2006 Equitrend, Inc.

So much of what you hear in the financial press these days is so wrong, that one must consider most financial television and print to be strictly for entertainment purposes only. In this article, were going to examine one of the big lies constantly being pedaled, the myth of Buy and Hold.

Buy a stock or mutual fund and hold.it through thick and thin for 30 years and you will make money, they say. On an annual basis, the market goes up a little less than 2/3 of the time. Over 5 years, it goes up of the time. Over 30 years, you are virtually guaranteed a positive return.

They spout these statistics because the financial industry is wholly dependent on buy and hold. With a buy and strategy, your broker doesnt need to know how to manage money or guard your portfolio. All he has to do is sell you more products and collect his commission, or more recently, a hefty percentage of your portfolio as a management fee.

In a perfect world of ever rising stock prices, buy and hold would be a viable plan, but the real world tells a different story, a sad story of the consequences of blindly following a buy and hold strategy.

Here are the tragic facts:

* $100,000 invested in the S&P 500 in January, 2000, was worth $84,901.72 in January, 2006.

* $100,000 invested in the NASDAQ 100 in January, 2000, declined to $44,370.97 by January, 2006.

* The average recession in the United States decreases major U.S. equity indexes 43%.

* The NASDAQ decline from March, 2000 to October, 2002, will require a 461% gain just to get to break even.

* Of 16 major national stock markets, investors from only five would have been guaranteed positive annual returns over every 20 year period during the past century.

At best, buy and hold investors have been treading water for the last six years, and by treading water, theyve actually been going backwards since the Consumer Price Index has been going up an average of 2.5% per year. But to many investors, treading water would have looked like a really good deal.

They were the people who watched their nest eggs implode by as much as 80% between 2000 and 2002 while their brokers and mutual fund managers did nothing to save them. Retirements were destroyed; millions had to return to work, dreams were put on hold. Families suffered and still suffer today in real and tangible ways.

And today many say that The Millennium Bear Market of 2000 cant happen again. But it has happened before and will happen again! Between 1972 and 1974, the NASDAQ dropped 60% and stayed down until April, 1980. Eight years of negative returns.

Not to mention the Dow crash of 1987 or the fourteen year bear market in the Nikkei Index. Even without a headline making drop, U.S. stock returns over the last five years have been negative when factored for inflation.

The only sane solution for an investor today is to educate himself and find a better way to protect and grow his wealth. There are a number of proven options available, but the absolute worst thing one can do is listen to the pundits who tell you to buy and hold.

Life is Tough – Getting Movies Should Be Easy

Although the aroma of fresh popped popcorn and a darkened theater with a towering wide screen lures us to new released films, most of us still view far more movies at home than at the theater. With the introduction of online movie rental and movie downloads nearly ten years ago, the selections offered by the local video store are not the only options viewers have for their home entertainment.

Aside from the improved affordability, movie fans enjoy watching movies at home because of convenience. With busy lives that keeps us at work and on the road, time spent relaxing at home is at a premium and any service that allows us to enjoy that time without additional complexity or effort is highly prized. With this in mind, which of these movie services provides the most value for the home viewer?

Traditional video stores can be convenient for some last minute movie picks; or at least convenient if a person lives within a few blocks of the store. If someone suddenly decides at 5:30 pm. that there is time to squeeze in a showing of the most recent Harry Potter flick with the kids, then it is certainly easy to get to and from the store and be ready to view within a half an hour. This assumes of course that the store will have a copy of the DVD available in house at the time it is being sought.

If Harry isn’t at the local video store, then browsing through the remaining films and examining the DVD cases may provide a hint as to what the family might enjoy. After the movie, the viewer will then have at least a couple of days to shuttle back to the store and return the movie before incurring any late fees.

Movie downloads are one of the newer options. Certainly, downloading a movie can allow viewers to decide at the last minute to view Harry Potter, or some other movie, as well. Just a quick 5 minute visit to the download site on line to select and initiate the download allows viewers to remain at home throughout the process. Most films require approximately an hour to download depending upon connection speed. The good news however is that many movie downloads are capable of allowing viewers to begin watching the movie only a matter of minutes into the download process.

There is no worry about returning rented movies that are downloaded or any late fees. Upon download, viewers have a specified period of time in which to watch the movie before it expires. Movielink for example allows movies to be stored for up to 30 days. Perhaps the one drawback for many movie downloads is that they often must be viewed on a PC rather than a television unless viewers have a connection between their PC and TV. The future however, may provide greater flexibility as legal movie download services may be better positioned to allow burning movies to DVD as some of the digital rights management issues are being addressed with movie studios.

Online movie rental services can certainly ease the process of selecting and obtaining movies. Users can go online and select from over 75,000 titles, nearly five times the number of titles offered in a local video store. Here users can create a list of movies in advance that will automatically arrive at their door. Movies requested generally arrive within 1 to 2 business days after they are requested. Users merely stick the DVDs in an envelope for the mailman to pick up when they are ready to return them; and only when they are ready to return them. There are no due dates and no late fees either. The most evident drawback to this system is for those viewers who don’t decide they have the time to view a movie until earlier that same day. Mail delivery does not allow such last minute decisions.

Online movie rental services are evolving however to better accommodate those last minute choices. Netflix, the largest online movie rental service, announced in early 2007 their service can now provide a “Watch Now” feature which allows customers to stream movies directly to their PC rather than waiting for the DVD in the mail. Although not all movie titles are available for streaming at this time, it does provide a potential solution for the occasional last minute movie craving.

One of the final conveniences of online movie rental is that the sheer number of movies offered makes it more likely that a movie of choice will be available. In situations where viewers aren’t sure what they want to see, the Netflix service is even able to provide recommendations based on the comments and ratings of other viewers and the actual viewing pattern of the user. The accuracy of the Netflix recommendations has been applauded within the industry and certainly offers a better option than merely reviewing the information provided by production studios on the sleeves of a DVD.

Each movie service offers different convenience advantages for home movie viewers. Determining whether movie downloads, online movie rental, or use of the local video store is best, may be dependent upon the preferred viewing patterns of a user and their access to a computer or the proximity of a local video store.

Breaking Through the Barriers

You’ve tried everything, you’ve listen to the experts, in frustration you shout out, “Why can’t I seem to figure this out?” This can be stated for many areas in life, whether you are working on health, finances, business, improved communication skills or relationships. Quite often when we start out on the path to change one or more areas of our lives, we hit stumbling blocks and set backs.

We’ve made promises to ourselves that this time it will be different, this time you’ll keep your promise to yourself or your new years resolution. You start thinking, willpower, yes, I just need more will power. Then you start to feel the strain as you try to force your way through.

Sadly, if it was just willpower that was needed then many more people would be successful. Willpower is more like an elastic band, the more you force and stretch it, the tighter it gets, the harder it is to hold until it eventually snaps back or breaks.

Most causes of failure and relapse have more to do with habits and belief systems, many of which you are not even consciously aware of. You see science has shown that we have 6 areas of the brain, 5 of which are in your subconscious. So if your conscious brain wants to change and the rest of you doesn’t due to a outdatedbelief, 5/6th’s is much stronger than 1/6th.

This is why, so many of the experts tell you that to succeed you need to work on getting rid of your barriers, your self-sabotage due to outdated beliefs and habits.

There are different ways that are recommended.

    A few of them are:

  • Counseling
  • Therapy
  • Emotional Freedom Techniques
  • Positive Thinking
  • Flip Switching
  • Controlling your automatic negative thinking
  • Repetition of desires
  • Daily Focus on Goals
  • Belief Analysis
  • Coaches (in the areas that you are working on)
  • Subliminal Messages
  • Educating yourself – (In the areas you are working on, to give new information)
  • Binary Beats

Often people will need more than one. You are changing a lifetime of negative and destructive beliefs.
The imporant thing to know is that you need to change the RAS reticular activating system in your brain and create new and productive neuron connections.

Your RAS system quickly points out to you, that which can help you the most in achieving your goals and desires. The benefits are that you attract the type and quality of life that you have been dreaming of.
An example of how the RAS system works would be: You get a new car, suddenly you see them everywhere, yet you didn’t notice them before.

I have studied and tried many of the areas above. One of the areas that I found to be most helpful was the binary beats for the brain. I found them to be relaxing and helped me to focus on what I was accomplishing. When you are in a more calm state of mind, you open yourself up to more possibilities. You discover solutions that you didn’t notice before. However, when you are stressed, you literately close down your thinking cells and shut yourself off from succeeding.

Treat yourself to a better tomorrow. Breakthrough your barriers today and discover the possibilities within and before your.

How Women Can Negotiate Like Pros

Copyright 2006 Mary Greenwood

There are some stereotypes that women cannot negotiate as well as men: that women are not as aggressive, that they take things too personally, or that they are not taken seriously. As a woman negotiator myself, I believe that the same rules apply to men as woman. However I have listed five rules that should particularly help women Negotiate Like A Pro.

1. It Does Not Hurt To Ask. If You Dont Ask, You Dont Get.

It does not hurt to ask for something. The worst that can happen is that the other party says no. This is true in any kind of negotiation especially in dealing with a boss. Ask for that raise or promotion. Even if you dont get it, your boss may admire your pluck and keep you in mind for future promotions. If there is something very important to you, it is good to get it out on the table. However do your research and be prepared to defend what it is you want and why you should get it. Dont think that if you deserve a raise or promotion you will get it without initiating the conversation. In a job offer, try asking for more money and see what happens. If you have a bad customer experience at a hotel, ask for something like an upgrade or a free night. The results may surprise you.

2. Never Take No For An Answer

If you ask for something you really want and it is denied, dont take no for an answer. Try to find out why they are saying no. As they say, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Try to think of a different way to convince the other side to give you want you want. Go back to the drawing board and try to ask for what you want in a different way. Even a minor change, a compromise or rephrasing might make it more palatable. If this is an important issue, suggest a trade-off or package deal, so the other side might be motivated by getting something they want.

3. Look the Part

You are the one who should set the tone of the negotiation. When you come into the room for the first time, you should look the part. You should wear professional clothes. A woman should not wear a lot of distracting jewelry. Bring the accessories of success such as a nice briefcase and notebook. Project the image that you want. You might want to try it in the mirror a few times. You want to give good eye contact and be a good listener. You want to seem knowledgeable about the issues or issues to be discussed. Think of the expression, Fake it till you make it. Being a good negotiator is like being a good actor. Remember to play your part and look the part.

4. Never Let Them See You Sweat

It is important to check your emotions at the door before trying to negotiate anything. Emotions such as anger can make one lose control. If you are nervous, upset or unsure of yourself, you need to focus on what you hope to accomplish and tell yourself that nothing is going to stand in the way of your goal. If the other side sees weakness, they may try to bait you, so dont give them the satisfaction of knowing they have gotten to you. When I am upset with the other side, instead of getting angry, I actually speak more softly and more slowly to get my message across. Dont let your emotions interfere with the negotiation and never let them see you sweat!

5. Be Prepared

Like the Girls Scouts, you must be prepared. If women feel they are not always taken seriously, they may have to work extra hard to do their research and be prepared. Much preliminary work must be done. If you are not completely prepared, consider delaying the start of the negotiation. If you try to wing it, you will regret it. It is important to have all the answers in advance. You cannot be over-prepared.

If you follow these Rules, you should be able to Negotiate Like A Pro.

What Makes A Hotel Boutique?

The term boutique hotel has been widely used in recent years, but what does it mean and why should you stay in one?

There are lots of companies that claim to specialise in boutique hotels. For many, a boutique hotel is simply one thats not part of a national or international chain and that distinguishes itself by its design, location or additional features. Many hotels aspire to be a boutique hotel without actually achieving it. Overall, there are four main elements to the true boutique hotel:

Size

Large hotels can be cool, trendy and chic, but they cant be boutique. Just as the word is used to describe small, design-led specialist shops, so it applies to hotels. Hotels that apply the term boutique to themselves or have it ascribed to them are usually small certainly less than 50 rooms and in some cases with only one or two. Their size contributes to the atmosphere and service that characterises a hotel with a difference. Whilst size might count in terms of the number of rooms, it doesnt follow that those rooms must also be small. In fact, a hotel than could easily accommodate 20 rooms might choose instead to create just ten, but make them spacious and luxurious, catering to the boutique market.

Design

When the first boutique hotel was opened in New York in 1984, by hotel entrepreneurs Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, it was praised for its original design and quirky nature. Designed for those who really wanted to participate in their travel rather than passively take it all in, Morgans, and those that followed it, challenged the way we thought about hotels. Although Schrager would not now describe his hotels as boutique, the name has been applied to those hotel who followed in his footsteps as far as design is concerned. From clean and contemporary to themed rooms and classic elegance, a boutique hotel must have a clear design theme and attention to detail.

Service

The hallmark of an excellent boutique hotel is its service. Whether the hotel chooses to assign a personal butler to each guest, or just hires and trains staff to anticipate your every need, the service at a boutique hotel is really what it should be at any hotel: ensuring that your stay goes without a hitch, that you can get transport, opera tickets or excellent meals when you want them and making you feel at home rather than feeling like youre a nuisance.

Location

Boutique hotels are scattered all over the world, from 24-hour cities like New York, London and Rio De Janeiro to island havens in the Indian or Pacific Oceans. What often sets them apart are the buildings that contain them. From former plantation houses to old textile mills, towers and palazzos, the type of building often forms the basis of the design and it is the blend of architecture, design and service that turns what could be just another hotel into a boutique one.

How Does Cosmetic Dentistry Work?

There are many people who are unhappy with their appearance in the world today. Some peoples teeth may have been unattractive for their entire lives, whereas others teeth may have aged and slowly become unattractive. For these reasons, many people decide to look into cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry could be considered a dental facelift, changing someones appearance so that they look better and feel better about themselves. There are many techniques in cosmetic dentistry, from braces to porcelain veneers. More often than not, dentists use a combination of these techniques in order to achieve the best results.

The first method widely used in cosmetic dentistry is Porcelain Laminate Veneers (also known as veneers). These veneers are specially made porcelain wafers that can be places over teeth in order to enhance their appearance. Veneers can correct unappealing smiles, reverse the effects of aging, and whiten teeth. Many popular movie stars use veneers today in order to have that perfect smile. There are temporary and permanent veneers. People usually ware the temporary veneers while the permanent ones are being made. In terms of cost, veneers usually cost several thousand dollars, depending on the amount of teeth needing modification.

Teeth whitening is another very popular way to change the appearance of teeth. There are two types of whitening, in-office or at-home whitening. In-office whitening uses a high intensity light along with 35% hydrogen peroxide. The patients gums are protected, and the whitening process takes about an hour. The results are usually teeth that are four to six shades lighter than before. The at-home systems generally use between 10 and 20% carbamine peroxide. Impressions of the persons mouth are made in order to make trays. The trays are then fitted and the patient is told to place a little bit of the carbamine peroxide gel in the tray and ware it while sleeping. The time of wearing this varies greatly from one week to six. Some people use a combination of in-office and at-home systems. This usually has a result of 12 to 15 shades of whitening.

There are three popular procedures to fix only a few unappealing teeth. The procedures for fixing select teeth are: tooth shaping, bonded-bridge, and resin or tooth colored fillings. Tooth shaping is when a doctor removes a very small amount of enamel from a tooth in order to shape it and make it more appealing. This is usually used for shortening long teeth, rounding off pointed teeth, or to simply make a smile follow the contour of the lower lip (which is more appealing). This procedure costs only $25 to $75 per tooth. The bonded-bridge procedure is used to replace missing teeth. The procedure usually involves taking out a small amount from teeth on either side of the missing tooth and then taking an impression or mold. From this, a bonded-bridge that can attach to the backs of the teeth on either side is made. There are resin-bonded bridges that do not fall out as easily, and there are metal bonded-bridges that are more expensive. Finally, people can get resin or tooth colored fillings. Resin is used to fill small cavities or a chipped front tooth. Resin instead of porcelain veneers saves money as well as time, but resin needs to be replaced every so often.

The final two things people can do in cosmetic dentistry are gum-lifts and braces. Gum-lifts remove gums in order to make teeth appear longer and eliminate a gummy smile. Uneven gum lines can make the teeth seem as though they are of different lengths that makes for an unattractive smile. The procedure is relatively quick and painless. Braces are the last, and most common, way to get cosmetic dentistry. Braces are placed on the teeth and can straighten crooked teeth, help fix over-bites, and generally create a more appealing smile. Braces are very time consuming, and costly, but are a great option for children. Some adults do get braces, but most opt for faster, cheaper methods. Braces run from $3,500 to $4,500, and require multiple visits to the orthodontist.

Cosmetic dentistry has been described as not a science but rather an art. Cosmetic dentists use many different procedures in order to improve their patients smiles and overall confidence. Some cosmetic dentistry procedures can be very costly, but yield great results. So, if someone has been unhappy with their smile for years, and does not know what to do, cosmetic dentistry may be the perfect option.

The Radiohead Story

Radiohead are that rare thing: a band that has maintained is artistic freedom over the years, despite being signed to a major label and a band that has constantly developed. This weeks article looks at the story of how Radiohead got to where they are today, and hopefully you can take a few tips so that you can make it the Radiohead way.

The band formed back in 1986, when they were at school. Originally called On a Friday, they played their first gig in 1986, at the famous Jerichos Tavern in Oxford. However, when the members left for university, On a Friday was put to one side, and it wasnt until 1991 that they reformed, and started playing again in Oxford.

At the time, Oxford was becoming a haven for independent musicians. Ride were gaining a national reputation, and by 1992 were playing all the major venues across the country, and Supergrass had just formed, playing the local venues, on their way to international stardom. Radiohead benefited from being part of the local scene, and the early 90s were ideal for indie bands.

It was then that they became Radiohead, and they started releasing demos, including the magnificently-titled Magic Hedgehog Demo. These self-funded demos were sent out to local venues, industry figures, record companies, etc., and started the bands road to success. Gradually, through hard work and persistence, they became very well known on the local scene appearing on the front cover of a local indie music magazine, and playing regularly around Oxford.

Record companies began to take interest as the buzz grew around Radiohead, and it was EMI who were first to pounce, taking the band on their Parlophone subsidiary. In 1992, they released their first single, Creep, which barely registered on the British charts, but gained them significant interest with the music press. The indie music magazine NME, for example, made it their single of the week, and with the backing of the independent music press, the band had momentum.

They released their first album, Pablo Honey, in the middle of a period that saw British indie music enter a darker phase. The album was given a lukewarm reception by the music press, who had so appreciated Creep. However, the public took to the album very quickly, and its success meant that the band soon went to tour the States. The pressure on the band meant that they almost split up, and as the album became more and more successful, the band felt that they needed more artistic freedom.

And this is where The Bends comes into it. Generally recognised by music critics around the world as one of, if not the best album of the 1990s, The Bends was the product of a bands desire to go it alone and to produce something extraordinary. Hiring a new producer who allowed them to do what they wanted, they released an EP (My Iron Lung) before the release of their second album, and went on to provide more musical depth than in their previous album.

Riding on the success that was Britpop, The Bends was a huge commercial success, far more edgy than the pop-rock of Pablo Honey. Lead singer Thom Yorke had become an idol for many indie music fans across the world, and Jonny Greenwoods unique guitar style had already become iconic. From their origins as a young unsigned band in Oxford, they had gone international, gaining success in the States, which not many British bands manage.

Although Britpop inevitably helped the band succeed, it also cut short the longevity of other bands. Those that managed to change and adapt when Britpop became pass remained successful, but there were plenty of bands who couldnt change, and soon fell by the wayside.

Radioheads attitude after The Bends was to explore new avenues, and the release of OK Computer saw the band in a more sombre mood. Many saw it as a natural progression, and saw it as a much better album than The Bends, while others felt alienated by the bands progression from the pop-rock of their first album.

The bands recording techniques also changed. They decided to keep away from traditional recording studios, after several bad experiences, and actually recorded most of the songs for OK Computer at Jane Seymours 15th century mansion near Bath! By moulding their settings to fit the characteristics of the band, they immediately improved their recording experience. Blending rock sounds with more ambient, technical sounds, the album shot to number one across the world.

With Britpop dead, it was a few years before Radiohead surfaced again. Having detached themselves from the scene, they now became a word of mouth band with an enormous fanbase across the world. Music events were organised through the internet, with very little advertising required, and tickets were near impossible to come by. The band seemed reclusive, and were close to splitting up, with Thom York on the verge of depression.

The release of Kid A in 2000 shocked both fans and industry alike. Stripping down the guitars, the album was at first difficult listening electronic, cryptic, synthesised, and with no stand-out tracks at all. It almost seemed as if the band were sticking two fingers up at the world, but it just went to show how brave Radiohead were in their musical direction. After several listens, Radiohead fans grew to love the album, and equally so with the quick follow-up Amnesiac. The albums blended electronica with jazz and ambient music, but maintained Radioheads lyrical hooks and character.

Again, the albums were given very little advance warning, and very little advertising. It was another case of the word-of-mouth buzz that Radiohead had been building up over the years, and with such a loyal fanbase, Radiohead are the perfect example of a band that has done all the hard work, sent off the demos, and gone from the top of the local scene to the top of the international scene.

After the release of Hail to the Thief, which was hailed as a return to the guitar-based indie of OK Computer, the band is today recording again, and Thom Yorke is about to release his own solo album, and live performances of new Radiohead songs show them back in The Bends territory.

So, did Radiohead make it differently from any other band? Well, probably not, if you look at it they started off by gigging locally, making their reputation in their hometown of Oxford and you could say that they were helped by two factors the rise of Oxford bands in the early 90s, and the rise of Britpop bands in the mid 90s. After gaining their reputation, they kept up the hard work, and the most important thing is that they never stood still: no Radiohead album is like the previous one, making them one of the most innovative and interesting bands around. The internet fanbase is another interesting factor, as Radiohead were probably the first band to really use the internet for their promotion, as opposed to traditional channels.

If you want to make it the Radiohead way, then, get yourself known locally, and most important: never stand still.

Tips on How to Buy a Gas Barbeque Grill

When it comes to learning how to buy a gas barbeque grill there are several good tips to be found online.

We found some excellent advice on buying a gas bbq grill from one grill vendor.

Your first consideration that you should think about is knowing how many you’ll be cooking for. While bigger can be better, you also have to consider cost, the amount of fuel you’ll need to have on hand, and the space you have to hold and house your gas bbq grill.

Another aspect is knowing how proficient you are in keeping that grill in top notch condition and how much time you want to spend on this. While it’s great to have the best and most feature-prevalent grill, the fancier it is the more parts to service, clean and break.
Paying a little bit more for a quality barbecue may be a sound decision if being built to last several years is an important consideration as you think about which one to choose.

Make sure that the gas bbq grill you buy has devices for flame taming that cover the entire burner.on your gas grill. This is important because grease is the most damaging ingredient for your grill. You also want the flame tamer to be directly over the gas grill’s burner.

The final thing to think about is determining which brand is for you, especially if you are going to buy something simple with hopes of adding on accessories. Some gas grill brands have few accessories, some have many. Some top brands to consider are Weber, Brinkman, and Coleman.

How To Talk To Under-Performers About Poor Work Performance

Copyright 2006 Deborah Torres Patel

Managers need to empower their staff to deliver what is expected. Oftentimes understanding peoples personal motivations is the key to turning around an unproductive employee, team or company. Never underestimate the power of sincere face-to-face dialogue as a stepping-stone to positive and consistent work performance.

WHAT TO SAY
Start your conversation by asking the under-performing person a question like “How do you feel you performed?” It is very important to understand where the person is coming from before highlighting their lack of success.

If the underperformer thinks that they are already doing a great job, then you know the person has clearly not understood the goals and what they were expected to accomplish, or they are totally out of sync with what is required.

If you ask them, “How do you think you did this year?” And they say, “I think I did very well.” Reply with “Okay, if you think you did very well can you explain or just share with me your thoughts on what happened. [Referring to a particular month or a particular project that didn't go well]

Listen objectively to the under-performers side of the story and do not make them wrong in any way. Simultaneously make a decision about whether their reasoning is legitimate or not. Then you can openly explain to them why you thought differently.

ADDRESSING PERSONAL CHALLENGES
When people are underperforming at work, there are often personal issues that may be coming in the way. Either they have a personal issue with you, another person in the organization, or with their team.

In some cases, they can actually be bringing an outside personal matter into the workplace. This is especially true for people that lack education, life experience, or an emotionally stable home. Often they are just finding life in general overwhelming and difficult to cope with. Unresolved personal issues can definitely come in the way of someone’s performance.

The other thing from a manager’s perspective is the motivation factor. It is wise to try to understand what your staffs personal issues are. You want to understand so that when you do put demands on your staff you are mindful of what they can or cannot handle.

You can encourage your staff to forget their outside personal issues while they are at work and actually be able to get away from them by focusing on work. If they still can’t let go, you need to sit down and try and help them to come to a decision as to how best tackle their personal challenges.

LISTEN WITH CARE
Many times people have an idea about how to deal with their issues but they have no one they can trust to talk with. If you make time to listen to your staff, it is virtually impossible for them not to do better simply because they really feel that they are working with someone who cares about them.

You can be very successful at turning around underperformers, underperforming departments and even companies by really taking the time to understand peoples personal motivations.

To accomplish this, create one-hour time slots for each staff/team member at least once a year to have a sincere conversation and invest the time in helping them to set their short and long term career goals. Its a good idea to do the one-on-one sessions 6 months before their annual appraisal.

Music is Vital for Personal Enrichment

One of the things a lot of us enjoy is listening to music. As a musician and songwriter, a great deal of my time is spent listening to or creating music. Sitting at my synthesizer and spontaneously playing a tune is also one way I relax and unwind after a hard day. Tickling the ivory is great when you want to relax your mind, and physically energize your body. Somewhat like physical exercise, playing a musical instrument releases pent-up anger and utilizes the extra adrenaline the human body produces when under stress.

Music is also therapeutic and vital to human beings and allows us to escape from the stresses and demands of our hectic and fast-paced lifestyle. Forgetting the worries we carry around with us, music allows us to take a journey to a faraway place, without ever leaving our chair: somewhere pleasant, exciting, and at the same time, stress-free.

Recording our favorite music on CD’s, iPods, or creating play lists for our computers, we can simply develop our own compilation of music-to-go and play them in cars, in the gym and while at work. With the latest popular technological invention, the iPod, the prospect of musical fulfillment is endless. The iPod can store a multitude of tunes and enables the listener to have virtually uninterrupted songs to enjoy whenever and wherever we choose.

With all the current technological advances at our disposal, musical expression has come a long way, taking recording music and sound to the next level. Whether you perform music or are an avid listening, most humans will agree: Life would not be as colorful without some form of music to enrich our lives.

Oil Exploration Update: U.S. To Play Catch-Up With Cuba

Startlingly enough, it looks as if the time will soon arrive when the USA will have to play catch-up with Cuba in oil exploration. The diminutive and destitute communist enclave that serves as Fidel Castros personal cigar plantation now realizes that it has enough oil reserves under its coastal waters to prop up its no-go economy for decades and, incapable of assembling the capacity to out the oil itself, the island nation has begun to license drilling rights to other countries, including China, the prospect of which alarms us, and Spain, the idea of which invites us to think of tapas.

In wisdom wrought from its neediness, the resourceful islet has also offered to license American oil companies.

Expectedly enough, the very prospect of Cuba scooping oil out of the ocean floor while America has outlawed it for decades has enkindled hot debate in Congress about the present wisdom of our self-imposed interdiction. The debate has rapidly blossomed into a gusher partly because America has even more proven oil reserves in its coastal waters, no doubt principally because it has even more coastal waters.

Persuasively enough in these oil-dear times, there seems to be enough of the black gold there to meet all of our energy needs for about 18 years, or long enough for all the leaders in the Middle East who we arent getting along with these days to go the way of leaders everywhere who, we determine, are irredeemably misguided.

Naturally, conservation societies have been galvanized into opposition by the mere prospect of an oil bit chomping into the emerald waters of our abundantly fishy coastlines in search of the liquid treasure below the reefs.

As the debate bubbles on, we can only consider a worst-case, best-case scenario. Worst case: we do nothing while foreign companies who dont exactly have the most reverential reputations in ecological propriety drill away and, as time allows, send oil spills slithering onto our beaches. Best case: we race to catch up with Cuba and maybe even preempt the ill-advised entanglements that might otherwise drill down into our hemisphere.

Since were actually talking about drilling in our own backyard pond, we might also, one hopes, do it in ways that are less likely to lead to the shameful oil blights that fill us all with remorse and send fish and fowl off to tarry death derelictions that strange countries in a strange land might less assiduously labor to avoid.

The Best Way to Save Money at the Warehouse

When your warehouse has reached it production capacity, your building can be expanded to accommodate your needs. When you expand the length of your building, the original end-wall may be reused (in most cases) saving lots of money. The design advances that are emerging today for manufacturing facility applications features a unique use of computer-aided design (CAD) to take the traditional components used in steel building construction and create thousands of customized structures specifically suited to your exact specifications. Components can be defined using a CAD approach and then modified until they fit the particular application. The “blueprint” is then downloaded into a computer-aided manufacturing process which completes that template for a pre-engineered structure. Each steel building receives the data from this computer program to pre-engineer your facility according to such regulations as building code restrictions.

Indeed, being able to meet the requirements of a building code (and in some cases, exceed it) you can help ensure the safety of everyone who will work there. Severe weather problems can be devastating against some poorly-constructed or ill-equipped buildings. However, with the help of this design innovation you can build your new steel building to withstand the harshest of conditions and protect everyone and everything that’s inside. Therefore, when you pre-build a new facility on a computer, you can be certain that it is a high-quality building and will be around for decades of operation.

The amazing assortment of exterior design choices is worth noting in more detail. You will have a number of choices that include stucco, glass, wood, brick, and stone to give your warehouse the best possible look. In other words, building with steel does not mean the building has to look like an ugly metal box. No matter how strict the building codes or local zoning restrictions, a steel building will easily accommodate such specifications.

The gain in popularity for pre-engineered metal building kits for the one and two story manufacturing construction market is due to the adaptability of steel designs for just about any use. Pre-fabricated steel building systems use a fully integrated set of mutually dependent components and assemblies that complete the steel structure. Included in all of these components are the manufacturing facility’s primary and secondary framing, a roof application and any accessories. Given these aforementioned features, to have a quality manufacturing plant-both in its appearance as well as in its function-the best investment to make is a pre-fabricated steel building system.

Finally, when using a steel building for a manufacturing facility, there is the benefit of the clear span frame. It does not need any interior columns or load-bearing walls to create an obstacle-free work area. It is possible to get the most out of your floor-space as the clear span allows the freedom to reconfigure the floor plan to accommodate your changing needs. When you got to construct a new manufacturing facility, the smartest approach will be to involve a steel building system.

The Advantages of Portable Trade Show Displays

Make sure you.next trade show is a success by bringing your own portable trade show display. Using onsite setups or trying to “create” your own exhibit can be disastrous.

A trade show represents an excellent opportunity to present your company and its products to an audience looking for new ideas and innovation in a specific field. And even if you are not attending a traditional trade show but something more like a product exhibit or vendor showcase, it is important that your presentation is attractive and professional so you can attract prospective customers.

Portable trade show displays are a good choice for exhibitors who travel to shows, bring a small sales force and want an economical way to display their company and product information. Below are some of the benefits of using portable displays:

1. Portable trade show displays can be affordably shipped via UPS or FedEx. Traveling for business can be a hassle. Many exhibitors ship their trade show display and all the demo products, sales literature and computers ahead of time to make the trip less trouble. Since a portable display is made to transport easily, shipping it via UPS or FexEx is not expensive. And you can even bring a portable display with you on an airplane if you are concerned about it getting lost in transit.

2. A portable display typically fits into one or two shipping cases. Were not talking huge shipping crates but portable shipping cases that arent overly heavy or awkwardly shaped. Most shipping cases have wheels and can be easily wheeled into the trade show venue.

3. No drayage fees if you bring the display with you. If your trade show display is shipped, typically the trade show venue will charge a drayage fee for storing the display until it is set up. Depending on how large your display is, the drayage fees can be hundreds of dollars. With a portable display you can bring it with you foregoing the need for the venue to store it.

4. Set up and breakdown of a portable trade show display is quick and easy. At most trade shows you have to use the sites laborers to set up your display. This can cost $100/hr per person making set up and breakdown of your display costly. A portable trade show display only takes one person and 15 minutes to set up or breakdown, saving you time and money.

Portable displays are all about convenience. They are easy to transport and to set up and breakdown. Consider a portable trade show display when you begin planning your next trade show booth.

How Much Money Should You Save for Financial Emergencies?

Copyright 2006 Tony Mase

Practically every financial planning and personal finance book you’ll ever read advises you to start an emergency savings fund, or rainy day fund as some call it, to meet unexpected financial emergencies, as one of the first steps you should take to build wealth.

Some advise a fixed dollar amount, such as $500 or $1,000, be set aside for financial emergencies. I’ve seen recommendations ranging from $500 to $12,000.

Others recommend saving a certain number of month’s income for financial emergencies, such as three month’s income, six month’s income, or as much as twelve month’s income.

Still others suggest setting aside a certain number of month’s living expenses, such as three month’s living expenses, six month’s living expenses, or even twelve month’s living expenses, to meet unexpected financial emergencies.

So…

With all this conflicting financial advice…

How much money should you save for financial emergencies?

Well…

According to Wallace D. Wattles, author of “The Science of Getting Rich”…

If you truly want to be wealthy…

None.

That’s right…

Absolutely none!

In an article titled “The Constructive Attitude”, Wallace D. Wattles wrote:

“… do not lay up for a rainy day. If you live right, think right, and work right, there will never be a rainy day for you. If you lay up for a rainy day, you will impress the sub-conscious with the fear of a rainy day; with the idea of weakness and incompetence, and so you will cause the rainy day to come.”

If you stop and think about it…

He’s absolutely right!

I don’t know about you, but every single time in my life I attempted to build up an emergency savings fund, guess what happened?

That’s right…

A financial emergency would pop up out of nowhere and wipe out my emergency savings fund leaving me right back where I started…

Broke!

Sound familiar?

Until I read those words by Wallace D. Wattles, it never dawned on me that, by my own thoughts and actions, I might be creating the very thing I was most trying to avoid.

Now…

Does this mean you shouldn’t keep any extra money at all?

Not at all…

In the same article, Wallace D. Wattles wrote:

“… provide a surplus, so that you may take advantage of any new opportunity…”

Once I began to build up a surplus to take advantage of new financial opportunities, instead of saving for financial emergencies, guess what happened then?

That’s right…

Lo and behold…

New financial opportunities started popping up all over the place…

And…

Interestingly enough…

The financial emergencies disappeared!

You see…

There’s a Creative Power within you that makes your life into the exact image of that to which you focus your attention.

If you focus your attention on financial emergencies, by thinking about them, by preparing for them, by saving for them, that’s exactly what you’ll have in your life…

Financial emergencies.

On the other hand…

If you focus your attention on financial opportunities, by thinking about them, by preparing for them, by providing for them, that’s exactly what you’ll have in your life…

Financial opportunities!

The Right Snow Skis

There was a time when everything was simple and this included snow skis. Before there were only some brands to choose from and all of them were for racing. With today’s engineering innovations, the shape and skin design has received more attention. Today there are over 500 models being tested by reputable ski authorities. If you were to have them it shows that you can have a different ski every day of the year.

Choosing the Right Ski

With so many brands and models, choosing the right one for you may be a tedious and mind-boggling activity. A lot of people resort to ski hires before buying. With ski hires, you can test different brands and models without spending too much. The first thing is to have focus when doing your search. You know your needs so search for a type that addresses these needs.

Ski Reviews

Ski authorities and publications test skis and release reviews on a regular basis. Read the pros and cons of skis that you may want to try out first as a ski hire. Reviews are made by certified instructors so they know what they are talking about.

Talk to Others

You can also ask experienced skiers or join discussions on the internet with other enthusiasts. There are a lot of points you will discover when you discuss skis with others.

Ski shop owners would also be one of the best sources for information. Most shops have staffs that are good skiers and they would have valuable inputs. They know the snow conditions for the place that you will frequently ski and thus can give advice what the best brand or model to use.

When to Buy

You may have tried several brands and models and may have listed down your impressions about them. Don’t fall for sales. They maybe cheap but then is it the ski that you are looking for? Do you feel comfortable with them on?

Check Popular Brands

Be sure to inspect and try on different models by top manufacturers. As you move from brand to brand, you will narrow down your choices and eventually have one pair that will suit you.

Consider Location

One other point to consider when buying skis is the location where you will be using them. The chosen ski must suit the conditions of the area. Each ski resort is different from the other and your skis must be able to deal with most situations.

Mt. Buller ski hire is available from Ski Chute 4. Visit the website at http://skichute4.com.au
